Local forestry workers rescued a brown bear that had been entangled in barbed wire near a forest in Sichuan, China. Police and soldiers from a Chinese People’s Liberation Army brigade in the southwestern province also took part in the rescue, which started after the soldiers happened to find the trapped wild carnivore.

A group of forestry workers on patrol in the Malan Mountains in China’s northwestern province of Shaanxi recently discovered an unusually large puffball mushroom. The humongous fungus was 32cm (12.6in) in diameter and measured about 25cm (10in) high, making it a giant among puffballs.

World’s first coronavirus reinfection case confirmed in Hong Kong, a university study reports

Researchers from the University of Hong Kong said they had confirmed what is believed to be the world’s first known case of a Covid-19 reinfection on August 24,2020. The 33-year-old man from Hong Kong was found to have contracted the coronavirus again, four and a half months after his first confirmed infection in March when he was treated and later discharged. The man had travelled to Spain in August, and returned to Hong Kong via London before his second infection was discovered.

At least one person was killed and dozens were trapped after a five-storey building collapsed in India, late on August 24, 2020. Rescuers managed to pull at least 60 people from the rubble, but a local legislator has warned that dozens more could still be buried in the debris. The building, which comprised 47 flats, is in the township of Mahad, 120km (75 miles) south of the country’s most populous city, Mumbai.

Twin bombings on an island in the southern Philippines killed at least 14 people, including soldiers and civilians, and wounded over 70 others on August 24, 2020. Philippine military officials said Islamist militants are suspected of being behind the attack. The two explosions were triggered in a town on the island of Jolo. The first was a bomb attached to a motorcycle that exploded around noon in front of a grocery store where two military trucks were parked outside, and a female suicide bomber blew herself up about an hour later. The latest attack is the biggest of its kind in the southern Philippines since the deadly January 2019 bombing of a cathedral on Jolo.
